Consumer Unit Upgrade

Consumer Unit Upgrade

What is a Consumer Unit?

A Consumer Unit, also known as a fuse box, is designed to distribute electricity around a building and protect electrical circuits from surges in current, by breaking the circuit when a surge occurs. Outdated fuse boxes have wires that melt in the event of an electrical overload. Modern Consumer Units contain RCDs (Residual Current Breakers) and MCBs (Mini Circuit Breakers) which can be reset with no damage when the power returns.

How much does an Upgrade Cost?

The cost of an upgrade depends on the condition of the existing unit and the type of consumer unit you need. You may also need additional items such as smoke detection or additional switches and sockets which will increase the price. Prices are usually around £450 for a typical home installation.

What are the Signs I Need an Upgrade?

Old Fuse Box or No RCDs

An old fuse box with a wooden back, cast iron switches or both. They usually begin to deteriorate when they are over 10 years old. RCDs are vital in preventing electric shocks. They should have a push button marked ‘T’ or ‘Test’.

Blown or Loose Fuses

Frequently blown fuses highlights system issues and can be a result of an overload of power where your old system is not designed to handle modern day needs. Loose fuses can cause problems such as partial power loss where you get power outages in one area of your home.

Visible Burns or Noises

Burning, melting or charring in your fuse box should be an immediate warning that it needs replacing and may require a full rewire if the damage is bad. Any sound from the fuse box such as buzzing may indicate that there is a loose connection or damage which could cause a fire.

When Getting New Appliances or Renovating

When installing new appliances such as a hot tub or fridge, that will consume a large electrical load, you will need to have a Consumer Unit with RCD protection to be able to handle the increased demand of power. If you’re planning on renovating or building an extension, think ahead about additional circuits you may require. Always make sure your Consumer Unit has enough space to accommodate any additions.
