Periodic Inspections
It is a strict requirement of the IEE Regulation BS7671 that every electrical installation in the United Kingdom is certified upon completion and periodically inspected at regular intervals afterwards.
The regular inspections and testing are necessary due to all electrical installations deteriorating over time from factors such as corrosion, ageing, physical damage, and environmental influences. Consequently, Legislation requires that certain electrical installations are maintained in a safe condition and therefore must be periodically inspected and tested to determine whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued use. Licensing authorities, public bodies, insurance companies, mortgagors and others may require periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations.
Electrical testing is required at periodic intervals as follows:
- 10 years for a domestic installation
- 5 years for a commercial installation
- 3 years for industrial premises
- 3 years for caravan parks
- 3 years for factories and industrial properties
- 1 year for swimming pools
- 1 year for hospitals
- 1 year for petrol stations
PAT Testing
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) is the name for the tests performed on your electrical equipment to assess its safety. It’s extremely important to keep your equipment well maintained with regular checks to prevent electrical accidents.
